За компанией...стоит...

Russian to English Other Journalism
Из статьи в RBC Daily:

За прописанной в офшорной зоне Виргинских островов компанией Spring Time Holding, которая приобрела 7,59%-ный пакет бумаг российского нефтегиганта, стоит ConocoPhillips.

Spring Time Holding, a BVI company which acquired a 7.59-percent stake in..., is backed (supported) by ConocoPhillips?

Discussion

David Knowles Aug 9, 2012:
To nevaeva I don't think that Spring Time Holding is owned in any way by ConocoPhillips. See this article: http://russiajournal.com/node/18530

The likely scenario is that STH has been commissioned by ConocoPhillips to quietly buy a stake in the company (Lukoil), which CP will then buy from STH. CP would of course indemnify STH against any losses and pay it a substantial fee. Disclosure rules probably mean that CP would have to disclose any holding in another oil company, even if it couldn't buy up a sufficient stake to be interesting.
Yulia Savelieva Aug 9, 2012:
Subsidiary I answered "owned by" but then changed my answer in the notes to "Spring Time Holding is a subsidiary of ConocoPhillips" (which means that ConocoPhillips either owns, partly or wholy, or controls Spring Time Holding). Do you think this reflects the original meaning of ConocoPhillips "standing behind" Spring Time Holding? I am not arguing, just asking. )))

Sorry, that was not quite correct.

It should be: Spring Time Holding is a subsidiary of ConocoPhillips.

Behind the company ...stands...

I would leave it in exactly the same order.

Behind Spring Time Holdings, an offshore company registered in the BVI, which acquired ..., stands ConocoPhillips.

It may CP may own STH, but more likely it's just using STH to build up a stake.

Hope my comment has helped!
agree Michael Korovkin : whether one is outright owned by the other (I, for one, am sure t'ain't), using "owned" in the translation would be a totally unjustifiable inference, especially since a perfectly fluent and direct translation (here) is available.

I agree that "owned" is not justified, and it looks rather like a translation from English anyway (or at least an import of an English financial journalistic expression).
