Italian term

grossolanità dell'Lsd

Italian to English Art/Literary Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc. Psychology Book
The literal translation doesn't seem quite right in this case.

Contesto:

"Il 'trip' psichedelico è stato il primo esempio di questa strada ed è stato abbandonato perché pericoloso. Ma lo è stato a causa della grossolanità e della pericolosità dell'Lsd."

Grazie,

Barbara

Discussion

Raffaella Berry Aug 26, 2012:
This was also my interpretation, though some other members seem to disagree.
Dr Lofthouse Aug 26, 2012:
grossolanita = coarsness, or 'unrefined' - I think there is a suggestion regarding the purity (or lack of purity) of the LSD being responsible for the 'bad' hallucinogenic trips people experienced. Apparently the 'pure' stuff gives such good 'trips' it was used by psychiatrists to treat depression etc

Unpredictable effects of LSD

The effects of LSD are unpredictable. They depend on the amount taken, the user’s personality, mood, and expectations, and the surroundings in which the drug is used

Effects Are Unpredictable

Although most LSD trips include both pleasant and unpleasant aspects, the drug's effects are unpredictable and may vary with the amount ingested and the user's personality, mood, expectations, and surroundings.

agree philgoddard : As your reference says, it has both pleasant and unpleasant effects. None of the previous answers takes account of this.

harsh effects

"Grossolanità" literally is coarseness, which, in this case, doesn't really scan properly but gives an impression of the intended meaning. Since the context refers to the effects of LSD, I'd say that "harsh effects" is a likely substitute. Particularly when paired with "pericolosità" or "dangerousness"

My initial confidence was 50/50 but I'm a little less confident as "grossolanità" may also refer to the cheapness of an item/substance. Depending on the wider context of the text, the word may refer to the effects or the cheapness/availability of the substance.

The complexities of language!!!

agree Glenda Janssen : I think you are right. Having read a lot of literature on the subject, it seems that a problem with LSD psychotherapy is that it can be a bit like using a hammer to open a window... More context could certainly help.

cheap quality

"Grossolano", in this case, means coarsely or cheaply made, and refers to the quality of the substance rather than its effects. You might want to rephrase the sentence as "because of the cheap quality and dangerous effects of LSD."
Peer comment(s):

disagree Tom in London : not the quality of the LSD - it refers to the crude, uncontrollable nature of its effects

...because LSD is too crude and dangerous

in the sense that LSD is too rough to have much therapeutic value.

deleterious / traumatic effects

I would say:

"...due to LSD's deleterious and dangerous effects."

Or "traumatic" could be used as an alternative.

I think both these words reflect the ugly and horrific side of using this drug, which the use of "grossolanità" seems to be conveying.

Example sentence:

"It is generally reported that LSD has deleterious effects on performance in tests requiring a high degree of attention, concentration or motivation."

"In fact, he was an LSD user himself, discovering that the deleterious effects of the drug produced a spiritual state similar to the one that helped him give up drinking in the first place."

because LSD is so gross and dangerous

In fact, on many people its effects are rather gross: those trips lack subtlety
