Еще вариант: предпроектное резюме вариантов реализации проекта для руководства потенциального заказчика (клиента) - главное, imho, что ПРЕДПРОЕКТНОЕ (если в устной форме - то брифинг, если в устной форме с показом слайдов - тоже брифинг или презентация, или предпроектное совещание, если в письменной форме, но со слайдами - презентация, если "голым текстом" - предпроектная пояснительная записка".

В данном случае я бы не зацикливался на том, чтобы перевести слово "brief" однозначным термином. Imho, его не существует.

Если ХХХ - заказчик, то тогда, несомненно, "задание". Но зачем ему (ХХХ) энто его собственное задание "understand"? Если уж он "дает задание", то, наверное, понимает, чего хочет.
А вот, если YYY (потенциальный исполнитель) заполняет "brief template" (как я понимаю, разработанную заказчиком, т.е. XXX), то YYY, imho, НИКАК НЕ МОЖЕТ ДАВАТЬ ЗАДАНИЕ ЗАКАЗЧИКУ - "ПОНЯТЬ", а что он может - кратко изложить, что он - потенциальный исполнитель - собирается делать, чтобы выполнить "задание" Заказчика" с целью "понравиться" ему (Заказчику) "любимому" и получить контракт.
