beer labels
This is a document about standards for labels on beer bottles, in particular for the rolls on which the labels are supplied. So it has lots of stuff about permissible tolerances and packaging, but this requirement comes right at the beginning.
Этикетки поставляются в рулонах. На общем полотне просечка между этикетками наносится строго на толщину этикеточного материала.
просечка could be "cut-out", which I would take to be the outline shape of the label. It doesn't occur again. There is also another phrase used for the separation between labels - расстояние между этикетками в рулоне (шаг этикетки), so this must be something different.
Any suggestions welcome!

die-cut
The labels are die-cut, especially the funny-shaped ones. So the requirement here is to the "die-cut depth not to exceed the label thickness", so as not to damage the backing material
Note from asker:
This is an interesting suggestion. I had in mind that the labels were on the roll separately without any spare (waste) paper, but I suppose they might be cut on the roll (before rolling) and the spare paper removed. |

: punch - по-моему, это вырубка, когда изделие (коробка, этикетка) вырубается из листового материала. Возможно, я неправ

: Your example description doesn't fit what's being asked for. It doesn't even sound like a term to me, more like a description of (possibly oversized) stappler.

To David. I am not 100% sure, perhaps it is so. You are right, the labels are not cut off, they are just peeled off before being applied to the bottles.

Note from asker:
Thanks Nikolai - is it possibly a "notch" marking the pitch (шаг) of the labels, to calibrate the equipment? I don't think the labels are cut off - rather they are peeled off and applied to the bottles. |

: Sorry - no. Stitcher is used to stitch things together, usually folds of paper or other product components. Yes, in the process it does cut or punch holes through, but that is done only to facilitate the stitching itself.

Перфорация - это просечка ножом на бумаге штрихов линии отрыва. Благодаря перфорации изделие легко и ровно может быть разорвано или сложено.

A perforation is a small hole in a thin material or web. The process of creating perforations is called perforating, which involves puncturing the workpiece with a tool.
Perforations are usually used to allow easy separation of two sections of the material, such as allowing paper to be torn easily along the line.

slits
First, the reason for confidence: 7 years experience working for a multinational software supplier for the cardboard, packaging, paper corrugating industry. I still have occasional nightmares with carboard boxes, lids, partitions, pads, folds etc chasing me across dictionary pages :-)
Anyway, what you are after is called "slits" in the industry. This is what separates sheets of paper, esp. labels and stickers, in a roll.
You may also be interested in another term - "crease". This is similar but is used not for rolls (bales) of paper but for folded flat stack instead.
Another (technological) difference between the two is the tools used - knife/blade for slits and press or roller for creases. The two steps usually are done at the same stage in manufacturing process which is not surprisingly called slitting/creasing. Often done on the same, combined machine with the only difference being the tools used.
Hope that helps.

Note from asker:
Thanks KB! I'm not sure you're right though here... The labels are self-adhesive and I think are peeled off the backing strip and applied to the bottles, so there is no slitting or cutting involved. After staring at this for a long time, I decided that it was simply saying that there should not be any overlap between the labels, but there should be a clear gap at right-angles to the edges of the backing strip. Given the funny shapes (for neck labels for example) that's by no means obvious. So you could cut them, but you don't in this case. Anyway, I used the word "separation", although I'm not happy with the clarity of my sentence. I daresay there are some calibration notches in the roll, but they weren't obvious. I also decided that толщина meant "width" here. |
Thanks for your answer - it was the first one to start to get to grips with my problem! I think Michael M's notion of the labels being die-cut and the cutting needing to be precise could be right though. |
