SafeTex
: this means that one day they study one project and then the next day, the other project. I don't think this is quite what is meant by the Swedish term

No it doesn't. Check the definition of alternate in a good (large) English dictionary.

: Ja, i det här fallet kan man nog använda växeldra synonymt med att driva projekten växelvis eller alternerande. Sportreferensen kan man väl i princip glömma eftersom förklaringen kommer i andra halvan av meningen!

'drafting' -- pacing
This is a fun one, but the concept may be more widely understood in Swe than in Eng. You might just need ignore the sports reference...
as in 'alternate leading'.
But I see this 'växeldra' as is used in cycling and x-country ski races. In bike racing, they have guys who switch as leaders so the rest of the team can 'draft' behind them, saving energy for the sprint at the end. In skiing the leading competitors alternate between being first, even tho they keep up w each other. This saves them energy so they can pull away from those behind and help with the final sprint.
in Swe see, http://www.funbeat.se/discussion/show.aspx?ThreadID=470309
A good explanation in Eng at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drafting_(aerodynamics)

conjoin or associate
I have the impression that the two projects are conjoined but don't become one
For instance, you are looking at smoke alarms. At the same time, you may want to look at sprinkler systems.
The two questions are tackled together but are still separate issues

Discussion
Spelling it out would take too long. However, my Collins English Dictionary (1690 pages) gives ten options for the word alternate. Don't be confused by the most obvious options.
I fancy your "dessert with alternate layers of chocolate and cream".
Regards
I've checked the meaning in the Cambridge online dictionary
• with first one thing, then another thing, and then the first thing again
a dessert with alternate layers of chocolate and cream
• If something happens on alternate days, it happens every second day
Private cars are banned from the city on alternate days.
• US (UK alternative) An alternate plan or method is one that you can use if you do not want to use another one.
You'll have to spell it out for me how you understand the word 'alternate' cos I really don't see it.
