Discussion

Dylan Edwards (asker) Mar 21, 2013:
The terms I have found in English are "marginal reflex distance" and "upper eyelid margin-to-corneal reflex distance" - can't decide whether the Czech term corresponds to either of these!
Dylan Edwards (asker) Mar 21, 2013:
Thanks a lot, it's helpful to know that someone else is puzzled by the idea of diameter here - perhaps I'm going to say 'distance' rather than 'diameter'.
Jennifer Taylor Mar 21, 2013:
Here's her final response after I gave her all the info from you. I also sent photos to you from her book.

"Tak to bude asi to, jak jsem psala prve, vzdálenost okraje víčka od zornice, jen teda nevím, jestli od středu nebo okraje zornice. Taky mě tam překvapuje pojem diametr, což je průměr a v tomto případě jde spíše o vzdálenost..."

Does that help, along with Lucie's answer below?
Jennifer Taylor Mar 21, 2013:
Friend has forwarded the email to his wife, so fingers crossed! In the meantime, I found 'marginal reflex distance', and wondered if that was something to do with it. What do you think?
Dylan Edwards (asker) Mar 21, 2013:
Thanks, Jennifer. For what it's worth, there is one other mention of 'margins' in the text (in cases of entropion):
Za 3 měsíce po operacích bylo postavení víček znormalizováno, marga dolních víček dobře konturovala okraj oční štěrbiny, stav byl trvalý.

- but perhaps in the case of my question it really is margins of the pupils, not margins of the eyelids.
Jennifer Taylor Mar 21, 2013:
Dylan, frankly, I've no idea, but I've emailed a Czech friend whose wife is an eye specialist. I'll keep you posted if she can help!
Dylan Edwards (asker) Mar 21, 2013:
In this article as a whole, they're not saying much about the eye itself. The concern is with everything surrounding the eye - in particular, the eyelids. The illustrations (not very clear in my copy) simply show how wide the patient can open his eyes.
So I'm trying to understand "margopupilární diametr" in terms of how wide the eye can open, or how much of the pupil can be seen...
Dylan Edwards (asker) Mar 21, 2013:
In your link, Hannah, these are called 'macro' because they are macro photos, aren't they?
Dylan Edwards (asker) Mar 21, 2013:
Also:
Tři měsíce po operaci byly oční štěrbiny široké 7 mm a margopupilární diametr 3 mm.

- The patient's eyes certainly open wider after the operation (as shown in a picture).
At first I thought the word margopupilární referred to the margin of the pupils (pupillary margin) - but could it be the margin of the eyelids?

Note from asker:
Thanks. Does this mean the diameter of the pupil and margin together?
