Greetings

The word ‘ayrışma’ very briefly flashed onto our TV screen yesterday, so I'm afraid there's not much in the way of context. I have an idea what this means in a political context – my wife explained that it has to with paying money to families on condition that their women wore a headscarf. I have since learnt that the term is a little bit broader than that and can refer to any attempt to divide the Turkish people over the issue of Islamic dress.

But how to translate it into English? Does it always have to do with what clothes people wear? Is used by secular-minded Turks or by religious Turks or by both groups?

I regularly update my Turkish-English dictionary – what word (or group of words) do you suggest I add under the headword ‘ayrışma’?

Best wishes, and many thanks,

Simon
