"Naturally, our car architects are world class. Xxxx Xxxx, exterior design manager for [car manufacturer], says, "Most fledgling car designers began by doodling hot rods in break-time at school."
I know this term can be left in English, but I am looking for a witty translation that would render the fact the these car designers-to-be would doodle 'old cars', 'rudimental engines' at school to become one day fine, top car architects.

Magari, che ne so, qualcosa tipo 'auto d'epoca pimpate'?
Devo dire che l'aggettivo non mi entusiasma moltissimo, ma capisco le fonti (Pimp My Ride, per citarne una) e probabilmente si adatta al contesto.
In alternativa, macchine truccate, anche se quel termine ha una connotazione che si adatta maggiormente a macchine alla Fast & Furious.
