I think the preferred term (the one they are looking for is) "joint multiregional clinical study". Clinical trial and clinical study are differentiated in the same way as in English (with some overlap). Personally, I think "international" is acceptable. As with everything context is important but if the "joint international clinical trial" is good enough for the WHO it should be good enough for anyone and a proof reader complaining about this is going a little bit too far.
