My guess is that as we know this "cut" is done from the right of the excavator and "at 45 degrees". This looks like проходка IMHO.

Key may mean the first I think. The first for further "cuts" IMHO can be called "key" as "main" for example. Or that's what I think at least:)
Retreate I think is moving in the back direction. Going in the back direction seems logical to me because if we move forward it' possible to to bump into "the high wall".
