@ Asker I'm sure you're aware that the EN in your source text is seriously flawed — almost certainly non-native.

Everything here hinges, not around the term 'limit', but rather, around the term 'period'; if it is being used accurately, then it would normally be describing the period of time during which downloading is possible — the 'window' if you like. But in view of the rest of the text, Anthony's interpretation certainly makes more sense: that it is talking about the actual time taken to perfrom the synchronization; normally, in EN, we wouldn't have called this 'period', but probably, for example, 'time'.

So you may need to try and glean other clues from the rest of your text to try and clear up the ambiguity.

neutral Tony M : Actually, I'm not so sure it IS the actual 'duration'; I think they're talking about the fact that it has to be done 'within a certain time'; however, the source text is so poor, it may be wrong and you may be right!

Il me semble qu'on utilise aussi "délai" dans ce genre de contexte, pour donner l'idée d'une limite de temps fixée à respecter... Par exemple, on parle de "délai d'expiration" pour "time-out".

Donc dans la phrase en question, une autre solution serait :

... les appareils de ce type doivent respecter un délai maximum de synchronisation des courriers électroniques

autrement dit, il suffit de synchroniser chaque jour les messages du jour et depuis le dernier jour ouvrable, pas la peine de s'accaparer le réseau pour synchroniser tous les courriels des six derniers mois
