O termo se refere ao fato de que na "fachada" do prédio companhia só há uma placa de latão com o nome da mesma, mas a companhia não existe realmente.
Ao dividirem a frota por empresas de um só navio, muitas vezes na forma de sociedades de fachada estabelecidas offshore, os armadores podem reduzir o risco financeiro
