Dutch term

onderlossen

Dutch to English Tech/Engineering Ships, Sailing, Maritime Dredging and associated activities
In a text about a trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) the following:

"De XXXX kan zand of grond zuigen, walpersen, rainbowen en onderlossen."

The New Comprehensive Dictionary of Industry & Technology gives 'onderlosser' as a 'hopper barge' but in this text it is the verb that is used and I'm not sure how to put that into English. Suggestions appreciated!

Barend van Zadelhoff Aug 8, 2013:
dump Trailing suction hopper dredger

2.3.2.4 The discharge system
As said earlier, discharging the load can be done in two completely different ways, either by dumping or by pumping.

In case of the discharge area is a dump, opening the doors or valves in the base of the hopper does the unloading.
This is usually done with an almost non-moving ship, certainly when accurate dumping is required. During the dumping water is pumped onto the load by means of the sand pumps. The eroding water stimulates the dumping process. If the trailing suction hopper dredger is equipped with jet pumps connected to a jet nozzle system in the hopper, those will be used too. The jets more or less fluidize the load and improve the dumping process.

If the load is pumped ashore using the sand pumps than only these jets are available to fluidize or erode the load.

bottom unloading

live bottom trailer
The typical live bottom trailer has a conveyor belt on the bottom of the trailer tub that pushes the material out of the back of the trailer at a controlled pace.

The product is discharged at the rear with a conveyor belt, which is below in the trailer. The unloading of the product at the highest speed takes about 20 minutes.
