lo que quiere decir steer-by-wire es que la dirección no funciona con medios mecanicos entre el comando de dirección y los rodamientos.
por ejemplo, en un auto, el volante no esta unido a las ruedas por nada mecánico, sino que el volante se conecta a una computadora (por medio de cables) que a su vez se conectan a las ruedas para indicarles para que lado ir.
"El sistema Active Steering de BMW se encuentra muy próximo al concepto ‘steer by wire’ que han venido desarrollando las marcas de automoción en los últimos tiempos. Pero dicho concepto significa prescindir de elementos mecánicos entre el volante y las ruedas delanteras, y BMW no comparte del todo esta visión. El Active Steering utiliza una columna de dirección que garantiza ‘sentir’ en cada momento lo que se está haciendo, con lo que se gana en calidad de conducción."

lo he visto mencionado como \"dirección electrónica\" (en el caso de \"fly-by-wire\" es \"vuelo electrónico\", pero yo pondría entre paréntesis la versión en inglés ya que es un sistema conocido)

Description
Front Steer-by-Wire. Delphi’s front Steer-by-Wire system eliminates
the mechanical connection between the driver and the vehicle’s
front tires. The traditional steering elements are replaced by two
actuators positioned in the vehicle’s front corners. These actuators
receive input from the control module and turn the front wheels
accordingly. The system also uses an electric motor to provide
road feedback to the driver’s handwheel.
Rear Steer-by-Wire. This is the technology behind our
QUADRASTEER
™
Four Wheel Steering System. This electrical rear
steering system uses sensors to position the back wheels based
on front wheel position and vehicle speed. It provides a tighter
turning radius, increases stability, and enhances trailering.
Delphi’s E•STEER
™
Electric Power Steering System enabled the
development of a hands-off Steer-by-Wire system used at an
AHS demonstration in California. Our engineers designed a
position control actuator, an intermediate shaft, and software
for precise steering control. Sensors read the vehicle’s position
every four milliseconds, or 250 times per second—eight times
faster than the human eye. The system constantly corrects
the steering position to achieve precise control of the vehicle—
controlling the front-wheel steering position to within five
one-hundredths of a degree.
