From the mid-twelfth century the main text hand in glossed books
begins to show an extension of the tendency to compress forms which
we first noted in the second decade of the eleventh century in manuscripts
from pre-conquest Canterbury. Now, as a consequence of this
trend, and anticipating a parallel development in architecture, the robust
semicircular arches at the tops of letters like lower-case m’s and n’s
begin to develop a more graceful pointed arch. By the end of the twelfth
century this pointedness becomes angular, and in the thirteenth century
these letters begin to lose their curves in favour of abrupt changes of
direction made from straight or only very subtly curved strokes, and
the internal letter space or ‘COUNTERS’ under the arches of m and n look
less like a cathedral’s gothic arch and more like the triangular roof of
an ordinary town-house

"Counter" corrisponde a "occhio" nel dizionario Ragazzini. La definizione di "counter" nel Merriam-Webster è "an area within the face of a letter wholly or partly enclosed by strokes". Quindi, mi sembra strano che il Ragazzini si sia sbagliato.

Nel caso specifico, come indicato da questi riferimenti, si può parlare anche di "occhiello aperto", ma credo che anche "occhiello" da solo sia sufficiente. E credo che lo stesso discorso valga per "occhio".
