When the consistency increases over the optimal consistency, the screening efficiency and capacity decreases. The optimal consistency is dependent on the fiber characteristics, temperature, screen plate geometry and operating mode of the screen. Fig. 1 compares two cases.

Case 1 (Fig. 1.2):

All the dilution liquid has been added to the feed pulp. A relatively low feed consistency has been decided on. The pulp suspension grows thicker when moving towards the reject end. After the optimal consistency specific for each situation, the quantity of the pulp penetrating the screen plate is drastically reduced.

Case 2 (Fig 1.3):

The feed pulp already has the optimal consistency and dilution liquid is added to the screening space in order to maintain the optimal consistency, or thickening is prevented by means of suitable rotor and screen cylinder constructions. With ***LR rotor elements, for example, a suction pulse is generated in addition to the pressure pulse.
