Both target terms can be used depending on the context.
Normally a Managing Director is a member of the Board of Directors appointed to be the main excecutive in the company. In practice this is translated in many firms into the descriptive and correct Many other firms use the more concise and traditional مدير عام as it expresses that he/she has the overall responsibility, with several subordinated directors one of which would be the person responsible for administrative matters المدير الإداري , financial المدير المالي , etc. In recent years some translators trying to "arabize" other countries´ nomenclature have helped introduce المدير التنفيذي etc. Such terms can sometimes be tricky and/or not very true. A company can have many excecutive directors one of which would be the CEO. Try to translate that in this "arabizing" fashion!

In Arabic, the controversy concerning the \"Director\" & \"Manager\" has not been settled yet. Although each of them has a different function, they are both translated as مدير
The situation is made worse when we add another title such as \"Managing Director\". I have seen this translated as
and so on. I wish we could settle on one translation for each of these terms.

On a previous discussion of this issue, I like a suggestion made my our esteemed colleague Oudoud Alomrani. He mentioned that in Morocco they use مدير for the \"director\" and \"مشرف\" or \"مدبر\" for the \"manager\". I wish we could agree on something along this line. Thank you.

This is what Abu-Ghazaleh suggests. I think we had debated this title before. Look it up in the archives.

Managing Director is the Board of director's representative of actual management, but he/she is not necessarily to be the general manager. Some corporates have both titles.

Also, it is not necessarily for a Managing Director to be the President of the Board. There can be both titles in the same organization.

Throughout my experience, I have encountered cases in which a company is administered by a Board of Directors, among which One is appointed Managing Director. At the same time, that ManDir is not totally dedicated for the business as he/she might be responsible for another biz. This is compensated by a GM whose major decions are liable to validation or invalidation by the ManDir. In this case, both titles are working with different job description.
Liguistically, as far as I see it, العضو المنتدب أو عضو مجلس الإدارة المنتدب is the most realistic and close to the liguistic fact of the English.

I used to work for a regional company with offices in three Arab capitals, kuwait, riyadh & cairo. Cairo and riyadh offices were managed by a GM while the headoffice, in kuwait, used to be run by the ManDir. Here is a company, run by a Board of Directors, with one as ManDir, and both GMs were not members of the Board. Iwish i was useful.

neutral Hatem Abacid : If you refer to Egyptian practises, would you inform of the actual difference between ManDir and GenMan? Hope moderator would not object, it is truly important to know. Thx

Managing director is the term used for the chief executive of many limited companies in the United Kingdom, Commonwealth and some other English speaking countries. The title reflects his or her role as both a member of the Board of Directors but also as the senior manager.

At investment banks and other financial institutions, "managing director" does not refer to the chief executive but can rather refer to the head of a major business unit.
