one-sheet

English to French Art/Literary Cinema, Film, TV, Drama Filmmaking, film production, film advertising
Bonjour,

Tony M Mar 7, 2014:
...-sheets Poster printing being on standard sized sheets in the UK / US, we always used to refer to the size of the poster by the number of sheets; so a 'one-sheet' was just that — the sort of one-piece poster you might display in the foyer, or in the illuminated wall boxes at street level; then you had the great big posters that would be pasted up on bill-boards, for example, a 12-sheet (3 sheets × 4 sheets).
Given that traditionally paper sizes have been very different in France, I have no idea if the same system has ever existed.
Antoine Guillemain (asker) Mar 7, 2014:

Peer comment(s):

agree Tony M : Probably, though I still have qualms as this does not specifiy the actual size in the same way as the source text does.

'affichette' refers to a smaller format again, as stated by Sylvie R., 27×41 cm (I wonder if those dimensions are simply wrong?)

I don't agree with 'fiche cinéma' either, the ref. given refers to a kind of fact sheet, nothing to do with a poster.

I suspect 'affiche' is the right answer, though I would be happier of we could find something more specific about its size.

It's not about the actual size, no — but the key point is that it is the standard, all-in-one-piece cinema poster, and it is important to convey that, in order for it not to be confused with the big multi-sheeters.

I'm not familiar with the equivalent jargon in FR, if indeed it is expressed in the same way; a good solution would probably be to simply phone a film distributor!
Note from asker:
Yes, I've seen that, thank you :) However I find 'affiche(tte) de cinéma' more appropriate, I do not see why 'fiche cinéma' is the favoured answer.
I agree with you, though I'm not convinced that the best translation would be the most accurate size-wise. I think it could be something vaguely similar in terms of size, but that rings like actual technical film advertising jargon used in the movie business. If that makes sense.
