Swedish term

motverka stuprör

Swedish to English Bus/Financial Human Resources
I have a rough idea of this phrase, but I guess I've been gone too long from the cubicles, where this is apparently the new battle cry.

Deane Goltermann Mar 13, 2014:
Aha! Good reference Agneta, I recall now this stuprör thing as a fad back then, but I hasn't did out I guess. Good ol' 'tunnelvision' won't do for your context, Charles? As in, 'prevent', discourage; counter, work against.

But seriously, this is really a strange way to describe any phenomenon, I think.
Charles Ek (asker) Mar 13, 2014:
Thanks. I had actually started with "counteract a narrow focus", and this reference might get me headed back that way:
"Det kanske vanligaste stuprörsuttrycket i dag är stuprörstänkande, dvs. ett för snävt tänkande kring frågor som – enligt stuprörstänkandets kritiker – kräver bredare lösningar."
Agneta Pallinder Mar 13, 2014:
Språkrådet about stuprör Short but useful overview of range of use of stuprör, stuprörstänkande etc. as new words "nyord" - dated 2009 - see here http://www.sprakradet.se/5881
"fragmentation" might be too far in the "bitty" direction: stuprör's more solid qualities perhaps conveyed by "counteract barriers".

discourage tunnel vision

As you wish!

I tried to say in the comment that apparently this 'stuprör' thing 'it hasn't *died* out' as a fad ...

But, yeah, tunnel vision has been around a while, and seems to still be going strong ... as a term and human frailty! :-)

Understand completely, been there too many times myself!!
Note from asker:
It wouldn't be wrong to say that my own frailty kept me from thinking of this one! :-)

discourage reductionism

:o)
Note from asker:
Well, Descartes, I'm going to give you two points for getting me started toward my now preferred "counteract fragmentation". But I would strongly advise against putting your suggestion in a glossary. ;-)
