Hebrew term

מהות

Hebrew to English Law/Patents Law: Contract(s) divorce contract
I'm never quite sure what this is in the context of a contract: the idea is that the parties sign fully understanding the contact, ramifications and מהות of the contract. What is the best translation here?
Thanks!

Thank you so much for your response but I can't find any support to this on Google.
Thank you very much. I did some further research and substance seems to be used. Thank you Gad. And Harold and Emanual :)
Peer comment(s):

agree Harold Lemel : I agree that this would probably be the most appropriate term. Fundamental nature, essence, or even contents would be OK alternatives in my opinion.

Thanks a lot!
agree Emanuel Weisgras : I agree with Harold, it can also be essence or fundamental nature, but I would not use 'contents'

meaning

I think this captures the idea of understanding what the contract says without going into its particulars. Another option (which I like less) is "content[s]."
Note from asker:
Thanks. But there's content, ramifications AND mahut. So it's obvioulsy something very specific.

underlying understanding (or underlying intent)

Refers, in my opinion, to the basic nature of an agreement, or the initial intent of the parties. You may also consider "intendment," even though I wouldn't when it comes to mere agreements.
