In effetti si tratta di una valvola di intervento rapido di chiusura, in caso di necessità ovvero una "shut-off (emergency) valve" anche se esiste la valvola per la regolazione/scarico del vapore

L’impiego di tali valvole permette l’intercettazione e la regolazione automatiche del flusso dell’acqua nelle condotte forzate di alimentazione degli impianti idroelettrici, in condizione di massima portata e pressione, a seconda delle necessità impiantistiche ed in mancanza di energia elettrica. Per questo scopo, la movimentazione di apertura e chiusura dell’organo di intercettazione (valvola a farfalla o sfera) e di regolazione (valvola a fuso) è garantita da un sistema costituito da servomotore oleodinamico e gruppo meccanico composto da leva e contrappeso.

The use of these valves makes it possible to stop and regulate automatically the water in the pipelines that supply the hydroelectric power stations, in the extreme conditions of maximum flow rate and pressure, on the basis of installation needs and also in the event of electric power failure. For this purpose the opening and closing movement of the open-shut device (butterfly or ball valve) and of the regulation device (plunger valve) is obtained by an oleodynamic actuator and a mechanical lever and counterweight group system.
