español term

Minga por lo que somos

español al inglés Ciencias sociales Ciencias sociales, sociología, ética, etc. Ethnic identity in Ecuador
This is a document about the campaign to encourage members of ethnic groups to self-identify so that they can be counted, their health problems can be studied, policies can be introduced to protect their rights, and services can be extended to them. The initiative was initially met with apathy and some resistance. The phrase below is from a report on the state of affairs in Ecuador.

I found this possibly pertinent explanation of "minga" on Linguée:

The "minga", an indigenous tradition of cooperative and voluntary work for the common good, was planned as a participatory [...]

My initial attempt is "Stand up for who we are." However, it doesn't capture the meaning above. I'm trying to keep it short and sweet, like the slogan in Spanish.

Discussion

Muriel Vasconcellos (asker) Jul 29, 2014:
@Hans Thanks for your comment.
Hans Geluk Jul 29, 2014:
of course it's totally up to you... but I believe that my suggestion has both elements: Work together for who we are.
- work together: cooperate, pull together.
- who we are: is there literally.
I would not complicate it much more... :)
Muriel Vasconcellos (asker) Jul 29, 2014:
Reminder I'm looking to incorporate two concepts here: the main part is speaking up for self-identity (the "who we are") and the second part is about pulling together. I have two days left, and I'm hoping someone comes up with a slogan that includes both ideas.

Work together for who/what we are // Cooperate for a common goal

I would keep the sense of cooperation in your slogan.

It is from the verb 'mingar', which means cooperate (just as the noun minga in LA - definitely not in Spain btw).

One more option, just for in case: let's join forces for who we are

Meitheal that we are

Unfortunately, this only works if your target group is the remaining few thousand native Irish speakers in the dwindling "Fíor-Gaeltacht" of the West of Ireland.

Mostly a comment on the sad status of minority languages such as Kiwcha, Cayambe and Gaelige. And to record the equivalence for future etymologists :-)
Peer comment(s):

agree Hans Geluk : This is a vote of support. Unfortunately not a vote of approval. It's a shame that English does not have such a word http://www.scala.ie/index.php/meitheal

Thanks Hans, I appreciate the support. And nobody could approve :-)

(Let's) pull together

is the shortest and sweetest that occurs to me - maybe of use?

Suggested elaboration:

We're us when we pull together

OR more formally

We are (most) ourselves when we pull together

Or the other way round: We pull together because we're us/for what we are
Peer comment(s):

agree Chris Neill : short and sweet
