health outcome / state of health and resulting quality of life, assessed numerically

"Utility: In the analysis of health outcomes, a number between 0 and 1 that is assigned to a state of health or an outcome. Perfect health has a utility value of 1. Death has a utility value of 0."
http://www.medterms.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=5922

So "utility" is a numerical assessment of a person's state of health (and by extention the quality of life), in this case a person with MS. "Utilities", in the plural, refers to the assessment of utility in more than one case (more than one patient, the same patient in different scenarios).

"Utility" can be used in this field not only to outcomes not only for the sufferer but also for the caregiver, so it can refer to quality of life.

"Instead, the manufacturer obtained health state utility values from
Orme et al. (2007), a UK survey of health-related quality of life in
(EQ-5D) in people with multiple sclerosis. Utility values decreased as EDSS scores increased, with the exception of the utility value for
EDSS state 3, which was lower than EDSS 4. EDSS states 8 and 9
had negative utility values, indicating states that are considered to
be worse than being dead. The manufacturer applied disutilities for
a relapse, to caregivers, and for adverse events" (p. 13)

neutral B D Finch : I'd like to agree, but find the concept too depressing!

Well, thank you for saying so. I have to agree that MS (which my aunt had) is a desperately cruel and depressing business all round.
agree Peter Simon : Agreed. Also described here, http://informahealthcare.com/doi/abs/10.3109/078538901090020... nothing to do with costs in itself.

Thanks, Peter! Quite right; the point is that cost can be weighed against utility.

Thanks, Thayenga! Same to you :)

from above"..The effectiveness of treatments can be measured in different ways such as disease activity, the number and the severity of relapses or the progression of functional disability, regardless of the type of MS...Also to perform economic evaluations, a global outcome measure is required to capture the impact of treatments on the disease and the most frequently used such measure is quality-adjusted life years (QALYs). However, for QALYs to be used in cost-effectiveness analysis of MS, they must be related to a measure of the disease and disease progression. The Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) provides a good measure of the disease and has been widely used in epidemiological studies and clinical trials, in all types of MS. Lastly, detailed economic data that can be related to the different levels of disability (EDSS) are required..."

agree Charles Davis : Your very last note was added while I was posting; it wasn't there when I refreshed the screen just before. I had to investigate it myself because the rest of your answer doesn't explain what "utility" actually means. // Could mean several things there.

yeah, I thought perhaps the prev refs didn't explain it fully though "utilities associated with different disability levels" was fairly clear?
