Most developmental studies of social cognition focus on early childhood, possibly because children perform adequately in even quite complex mentalizing tasks at around age 4 years. This can be attributed to a lack of suitable paradigms: generally, in order to create amentalizing task that does not elicit ceiling performance in children aged 5 and older, the linguistic and executive demands of the task must be increased.
