Estonian term

hõbemedal

Estonian to English Science Mathematics & Statistics lõputunnistus
.... on lõpetanud Viljandi C.R. Jakobsoni nim Gümnaasiumi matemaatika-füüsika süvaõppe suuna hõbemedaliga.

I see something like: he passed an advanced course in mathematics/physics which led to the awarding of a silver medal. Is this a peculiarly Estonian thing, or can anyone translate this a bit more succinctly?

Thanks.

Discussion

Maren Pärn Jan 22, 2015:
Just to clarify even further: there may be several gold and silver medallists among the graduates. So it's not about the winner and the runner-up. All who meet the criteria are awarded respective medals.
DLyons Jan 15, 2015:
@Rainer/Lennart Yes, that's common in Universities. Certainly in the UK the rules vary by University and even by Faculty within University.
Lennart Luhtaru Jan 15, 2015:
Only As and Bs (or actually marks 5 and 4) in grades 10, 11 and 12 with only up to two Bs in grade 12. Gold medal would be all As in grades 10, 11 and 12.
rkt Jan 15, 2015:
It's not necessarily second in the course. Medals are normally determined by the student's grades only. Only A's would give you gold, mix in a B and it's silver.
David Connor (asker) Jan 15, 2015:
yes, DL. I understand now. Thanks.
DLyons Jan 15, 2015:
I think it's best to say he was awarded a silver medal. It means he came second in the course, but "silver medal" looks better on a CV.
David Connor (asker) Jan 15, 2015:
silver medal Thanks, DL. I know it's a silver medal in there, but I'm looking for more specific information as per my question.
