English term

Haitian Alps

English to Spanish Other Geography Tourism in Haiti
The context is the following: The attractions of Haiti, namely the culture, which includes voodoo, the Haitian Alps, and the beaches, are overshadowed by the unstable political system. (Book on tourism)

I have checked for the term in English and possible Spanish translations, and I have tried to find the area in maps of Haiti but have not been successful. Would sincerely appreciate your help.

Change log

Mar 2, 2015 05:09: Karen Zaragoza changed "Level" from "Non-PRO" to "PRO"

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

PRO (2): JohnMcDove, Henry Hinds

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Carolina Garrido (asker) Mar 2, 2015:
I somehow entered the question as easy by mistake but it has been changed to PRO. Thanks for reminding me of that, too.
Carolina Garrido (asker) Mar 2, 2015:
Thanks everybody. Charles, I really appreciate all the info about the "Alps", it helps make sense of the sentence, though it does not look like a mayor tourist attraction. Anyway, I have found several similar mistakes in the text I am translating. Aitziber thanks for the link, too, and Robin, thanks for the touch of humour!
Jennifer Levey Feb 28, 2015:
Ha! The question reminds of an old joke from Flanders (much of which, as everyone here knows, is below sea-level). One requirement in the Belgian driving test is doing a 'hill start' without rolling backwards. The test is done on the steepest inclines in the region: over-passes crossing the Brussels/Oostend autoroute.
Charles Davis Feb 28, 2015:
"This morning — or whenever Pierre got his lousy ass out of bed — there was another reason to be excited: we were to make a journey to the suburb of Pëtionville, high above the capital where Haiti’s well-heeled roost among mountains that have been appropriately described as the Haitian Alps."

"A 50 mile motor trip will take the tourist to the heart of the Haitian Alps around Petionville. The drive is unforgettable for the rich variety of flowers on view."

Aitziber Solano Iriarte Feb 28, 2015:
The only reference I can find to "Haitian Alps" is on a blog written in Portuguese (http://ricamericas.blogspot.be/2010/05/um-haiti-que-nao-se-c...
Charles Davis Feb 28, 2015:
It's around Pétionville, which is kind of the Beverly Hills of Haiti, with the country's only golf course. But even in English the name is pretty rare. And it's a bit of an exaggeration; it's on the northern side of the Massif de la Selle, but the hills are not very high.

Alpes haitianos

Yo usaría «Alpes haitianos», sin ningún complejo.

Es un tanto «extraño», pero al mismo tiempo tiene su «gancho» de cierto misterio, y cierta gracia...

¿Es que hay «Alpes» en Haití? ;-))

Saludos.
