Portuguese term

Almeijoafre

Portuguese to English Other Other
Does anyone have an idea what this means? I saw it on a sign to a village/hamlet in Portugal, and am very puzzled as I thought it would be a plant, vegetable or something. But can´t find the word in any of my glossaries, dictionaries etc.

Hi, yes agreed about the al bit! I´ve given up searching now... Must be a corruption of something.

Hi! Judging by the first letters, the name must have a moorish origin, but apart from that I couldn't find anything.

Hi, As you know, most names of small places in Portugal have some significance. I am just curious what this one means!
