Portuguese term

da cultura jurídica e policial mais antiga referia à escravidão

Portuguese to English Other Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc. Sociology of Law
Hi everyone! I'm translating an academic paper entitled "Direitos Humanos, Forças Repressivas e Estratégias de Controle Social" and am struggling with the prepositions in this phrase. Thanks for your help!

Vitor Pinteus Apr 14, 2015:
I agree that the text is somewhat poorly written, which makes it confusing.
I believe the text means something like: "Com estas duas posições apresentadas, sustentamos os nossos argumentos acerca das permanências históricas duradouras da cultura jurídica e policial mais antiga, associada à escravidão na sociedade pós-colonial brasileira, que continuam a afetar os sentimentos políticos vigentes/prevalecentes nas políticas de segurança pública no Brasil no tempo presente."

Thus, among other possibilities, the translation may be something like: "With these two positions presented, we maintain our arguments about the lasting historical permanencies of the oldest legal and policing culture, associated with slavery in the Brazilian post-colonial society, which continue to affect the prevailing political feelings/thoughts in the public security policies in Brazil at the present time."

Selected

of an older/outdated judicial and policing culture that dates back to slavery

This is my understanding. The policing culture is out of date with the modern world.

agree Anthony OSullivan : The entire sentence in Portuguese (starting with 'Com estas...) is poorly constructed but I would agree with your interpretation.
