@Rashid It just makes the translation a notch more informal than the original, that's all. I didn't see the rest of the original text to decide if it's appropriate. Going on the one sentence we have I'd feel safer to stick to the translation closest in meaning and style. This is just my preference.

There's nothing wrong with "shaking [off] the tail" if we are talking about a work of literary fiction. However, what troubles me a little is that the original didn't use the corresponding Russian expression "уйти от хвоста". Instead, a more formal "уйти от слежки" was used. But maybe I am splitting hairs.

Re: Yes, exactly, it's police slang. Why not use easily understandable police/secret-service slang, especially if it fits the text (which is not a police report, but a documentary script) smoothly? AFAIK, English tends to be less formal than Russian.

"Shake off the tail" is a slang and doesn't fit very well with the style of the original in my opinion.

Yes, exactly, it's police slang. However, the corresponding Russian expression "уйти от хвоста" wasn't used in the original. It's more informal and you will find it in detective novels & informal discussions but probably not in a formal police report.
