I've always translated "manias de grandeza" as 'delusions of grandeur', and it's so common that I think it would be OK in a dialogue. Here's another option if you want colloquial. I think it would fit in your context.

Encontro desde logo 3 "shades":
1. "Mania das grandezas" como megalomania, tudo "à grande" (como a Ana já referiu). Não me parece que seja este o sentido neste contexto.
2. "Mania das grandezas" como snobe/convencido/superior/enfatuado (como a Ana tb já referiu). Mas um snobe pode não ser megalómano, e vice-versa. Também não me parece ser este o sentido neste contexto.
3. "Mania das grandezas" no sentido de querer elevar-se, sobretudo socialmente, "andar com a malta rica" (como a Tania refere). Mas um indivíduo com esta mania não é obrigatoriamente megalómano e/ou snobe. Pode considerar-se que é uma pessoa pretensiosa, que tem pretensões. Daí o "pretentious". Creio que é este o sentido neste contexto.
