German term

Zack- und Flachband

German to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering electrical connections
In a text on a new electrical connector, I come to the options available for labelling terminals. The text reads as follows:

"...die Klemmen besitzen eine universelle Markierungsnut, in der sie mit Zack- und Flachband beschriftet werden können."

I'm not entirely sure what a "Markierungsnut" is, but I imagine I can come up with something adequate. Not having much luck with "Zack- und Flachband", though. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Discussion

Richard Stephen Jun 5, 2015:
That's a great idea. We'll just leave everything in the original German and then people will be able to google it under the original German name and there will never again be any confusion with translations.
Hans-Jochen Trost Jun 5, 2015:
An answer ... ... is that the vendor translates "Zackband" as "Zack marker strip" (or "zack marker strip"). So if customers search on google.de, they find one, if they search on google.com or google.co.uk, they find the other. Same for searching phoenixcontact.com under the desired localization. Why would you want to overrule the vendor's choice of a name for their product, no matter whether it is trademarked (TM, SM, (R)) or not? There would have to be something quite substantial in the broader context (which Eric knows but hasn't shown) to justify such a change.

brand name The Phoenix-Contact catalogue does not show a ® behind the term, but only Phoenix-Contact uses this term. It is available unprinted for thermotransfer printers or manual marking or printed with numbers
Other marking strips can also be inserted into the notches. It is clear that the "Flachband", called "Klemmenmarker", is no self-adhesive foil. This type is called "Selbstklebende Kennzeichnungsstreifen"
Richard Stephen Jun 4, 2015:
The question is, is 'Zack' a brand name, which shouldn't be translated or it a combining form of the German word 'Zacken' which needs to be translated, and was simply taken over from the German by some translator, who didn't know what to call it? I opt for the latter, and would call it a clip.
Hans-Jochen Trost Jun 4, 2015:
What's wrong with the "translation"? Newark, Digikey, Allied Electronics and others list "Zack marker strip" in their catalogs. The source text suggests that the grooves in the contacts may match that particular clip geometry. "Flachband" may refer to an ink or thermo ribbon also made by Phoenix Contact:

http://www.farnell.com/datasheets/1746753.pdf
or something like this:
https://www.phoenixcontact.com/online/portal/de?uri=pxc-oc-i...
where the black ribbon then serves to print onto the white marker ribbon, which in turn goes onto the Zack marker strip.
From the composition of the Google returns, I am getting the impression that the specific product name is used intentionally; I doubt that it has seen a Xerox style generalization of its use.
Richard Stephen Jun 4, 2015:
I used the phoenix site as a reference also. They do say 'Zack' marker strip, but, of course, that is a translation. They call the line 'CLIPLINE', which makes me feel that 'clip' is more appropriate, because, in fact, that is what they are; they 'clip' into the groove, which would be my preference for 'Nut'.
Hans-Jochen Trost Jun 4, 2015:
5 minutes googling ... Here are links to an answer for "Zackband" - "zack marker strip":

I don't have a specific word for "Markierungsnut" handy but "notch" feels like a possible choice for "Nut" to me. In some contexts (e.g., woodwork), "Nut" is translated as "groove".

2. Marking strips: compatible with all TOPJOB® S DIN-rail terminal blocks
WAGO’s marking strips radically simplify DIN-rail terminal block marking. The strips are rigid and, at the same time, flexible enough to allow fast mounting on all WAGO TOPJOB® S terminal blocks sharing the same profile

Kulka® marking strips serve as insulation between terminal blocks and chassis, as well as providing a marking surface for terminal identification.

“Zack” könnte ein Markenname sein, der sich entweder vom Montagegeräusch ableitet oder die Montagegeschwindigkeit hervorhebt. Gewöhnliche Kennzeichnungsstreifen sind immer flach und werden deshalb nicht besonders bezeichnet.
