OK OK well I'm glad that's all sorted out.
polyglot45 Jun 5, 2015:
But I do do "irony" just not sarcasm. And I was answering in like vein.
Tom in London (asker) Jun 5, 2015:
@ missdutch I know, it is meh in Italian but you know how these people are. I need to capture the same meh-ness in English. That "oh you know, I'm so elegant I can hardly bear to talk to you" thing.
Tom in London (asker) Jun 5, 2015:
Oh dear I see you don't do irony....
polyglot45 Jun 5, 2015:
so I have no class ? thanks for telling me !
It was meant to be brainstorming and, unless I have misunderstood, that means throwing out ideas to spur others into action
P.L.F. Persio Jun 5, 2015:
Why not "fine jewellery"? Alta gioielleria sounds rather meh in Italian, anyway.

high jewellery

Note from asker:
You're probably right and thanks for the links. It just sounds strange to my ears -like jewellery that has been smoking dope....
Peer comment(s):

agree philgoddard : I agree that it sounds weird, but it's the correct term. I have a feeling it comes from the French "haute joaillerie".

fine jewellery

I like this term better especially because I think it's more easily understood and souds "classy".

Note from asker:
I know, and of course I had thought of that; but all of the jewellery made by this particular maison would be considered "fine". This is their special collection of "alta gioielleria".
Peer comment(s):

neutral philgoddard : I don't think this works. The idea is that it's very expensive.
