Selected

someone who is likely to start each match

solid fixture=can be expected to be on the team at the start of each match = the starting line-up (that is, he won't be on the substitutes' bench). We can assume, since he is probably going to be always picked for the starting team team he can be relied on and is a good player

More or less. Someone who is important for the team, plays well and has a permanent spot on the team.
disagree B D Finch : That is the reason why he was a "solid fixture", not what "solid fixture" means.

consistently selected to play

He established himself as a player who was consistently selected for matches. Obviously, this would have been because, as Dariusz noted, he "[played] really well", though it would also have been because of his reliability. "Solid" means reliable in this context.

Thanks Teresa
neutral Yvonne Gallagher : he was selected to "start", not just as a member of squad

If he was selected to play, then he was not selected as a reserve and so would, obviously play from the start of the match.
