Spanish to English Medical Medical: Health Care report on Spain\'s Alzira Model
Hi everyone! This is a report on Spain's Alzira healthcare model. Is there any way to translate 'bata blanca'? I know it means 'white coat' but is there a term in English or is it self explantory due to the footnote? Thanks for your help!

Discussion

Muriel Vasconcellos Jan 28, 2016:
@ Jason I'm US English; only lived abroad for 2 years. 'White coat' is a very common expression here. 'Lab coat' is more like an internal expression among professionals. It simply describes the garment, which is also worn in laboratories. It does not refer to the medical profession. The book 'White Coat, Black Hat', is about medicine in the US.
Dr. Jason Faulkner Jan 28, 2016:
I think this comes down to which side of the Atlantic your audience is on. Lab coat is more common in the US. White coat isn't used so much in the US except when referring to "white coat syndrome" (hypertension that results from the anxiety of being in a medical facility).
Eileen Brophy Jan 28, 2016:
An interesting post Rachel, thanks for the link too :0-))
Muriel Vasconcellos Jan 27, 2016:
White coat Even though doctors may refer to their garment as a 'lab coat', 'white coat' is a widely recognized metaphor for the entire medical profession.

It is sometimes also referred to as a while lab coat but mainly just as a white coat.

agree Muriel Vasconcellos : Reminds me of the title of a book I read, "White Coat, Black Hat," by Carl Elliott - an exposé of medicine in the U.S. which is a huge eye-opener.

lab coat

It's more commonly referred to as a "lab coat" in English. That conveys the idea that it is something a doctor wears and not just a white coat.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Muriel Vasconcellos : This term doesn't have the same metaphorical significance as 'white coat'.
