Spanish term

gallo grande

Spanish to English Social Sciences Government / Politics presidential speech of Alvaro Uribe
Miren, aquí todavía no hay unos gallos grandes de prosperidad, ni todavía hay unos pollitos pequeños de prosperidad. Sí hay unos huevitos de prosperidad. Y hay que cuidar la gallina que está sacando esos huevitos. Ahí hay tres huevitos de prosperidad: ese huevito de la seguridad, ese huevito de la confianza de inversión y ese huevito de la política social (…) mientras mis compatriotas deciden cómo van a votar en conciencia, yo voy a cuidar esta gallinita de la confianza

bigedsenior Jul 11, 2016:
In Asian cultures, the Rooster is a sign of prosperity, so maybe the text is conflating this with Aesop's fable with the 'gallina' (goose) laying the golden eggs.

big rooster

If this were just a phrase on its own, you could maybe find an English equivalent like "green shoots". But it's not: it's a really nice, colourful extended metaphor that goes on for an entire paragraph, and you must translate it literally to do it justice.
Peer comment(s):

agree Charles Davis : It's going to sound very quaint in English, but I agree that there's no alternative, apart from completely rewriting the paragraph with a different metaphor, and I don't think that's feasible or indeed legitimate.

fully-fledged bird

I agree with Phil's idea, to an extent, I just think perhaps you might do a little better than "big rooster". After that you could use "chicks", "eggs" and "hen" in any case.

Meanwhile, in spite of the fact that diverse areas demanded that President Uribe must not intervene during electoral campaigns, he made the most of his public appearances to influence the public’s vote in favor of Santos. ****The most controversial of speeches took place in Emisora Todelar de Nariño, where he asked his audience not to leave the “chicken” without their three nest eggs – security, investment and social policy. This is the fable created by the President that seems to have captivated a large share of the population.*****

On translating metaphors

In two widely-cited articles, Dagut describes metaphor as being “by definition ‘original’” and “at the frontier of linguistic change” (1976: 22-23); “an individual creative flash of imagination fusing disparate categories of experience in a powerfully meaningful semantic anomaly” that “presents a particularly searching test of the translator’s ability” (1987: 77). In this vein, Hanne states: “Translating metaphor is one of the most fascinating challenges for translators of journalistic and literary texts, since it requires us to draw on a great range of our imaginative, cultural and linguistic resources” (208).
