German term

Tragmittel

German to English Tech/Engineering
context: cranes as defined in UVV BGV D6 "Krane"

(1) Krane im Sinne dieser UVV sind Hebezeuge, die Lasten mit einem Tragmittel heben und zusätzlich in eine oder in mehrere Richtungen bewegen können.

Found this definition for cranes on the Net

"machines for lifting or lowering a load, and moving it horizontally, with a hoist mechanism"
and am wondering if hoist mechanism is accurate for Tragmittel.
Any input much appreciated!
TIA, Beth

Tragmittel

"load attachment" is the term used in this field. Load attachments can be
grabs, hooks, spreaders, tongs etc.

Hoist mechanism would not be the right term, because these are Hebezeuge
(implying cranes of different types
normal cranes, overhead cranes, mobile crane and many others.

lifting gear

is what I think you may need; from the net, it appears that the Tragmittel is actually no more than the steel wire or chain with which the load is hoisted, and sometimes is extended to cover the lifting hook as well. Thus I think the above may cover it. "Lifting appliance" is another possibility.

Lifting appliance? Disregard that comment - see my posting above

rigging (equipment, hardware)

Eurodicautom suggests "means for suspending loads" which is precisely what the term 'rigging' involves.

"Rigging is the ropes, chains, and other gear used to support, position, and control equipment or materials." (see ref)
