Discussion

Robert Carter Feb 8, 2017:
@Charles Nice explanation there, thanks. I've often felt there is a kind of logic to these punctuation foibles, but I couldn't put my finger on what exactly was going on.
Helen Jane Hadley (asker) Feb 7, 2017:
I hope that helps!
Charles Davis Feb 7, 2017:
Yes, it's wrong, though there is a reason for it "3.1.

People put a comma in these cases to reflect a pause.
neilmac Feb 7, 2017:
Agree That errant comma is endemic in Spanish writing. People feel they need to put a comma after the subject and do so will-nilly, as they are unaware of the pertinent usage/syntax rules. And to answer this query properly, we need context. At least let us see the whole sentence, not just a part of it.
Helen Jane Hadley (asker) Feb 7, 2017:

The expression is taken from a list of companies, therefore the sentences that precede and follow are pretty much identical.

Robert Forstag Feb 7, 2017:
Context More context would be helpful here (i.e., the entire sentence, as well as the sentence that precedes and follows it, in at least one instance of use). It also does not look like the comma belongs in the text fragment posted.

whose defrauded amount is specified as

Other versions are possible. I don't actually like my first attempt, but that's what it says.

If it's just a list, I might think about using dashes, as follows:
->
"COMPANY - amount defrauded - xxx EUR'
