Italian term

bicchiere a luce ampia

Italian to English Other Wine / Oenology / Viticulture
Any ideas on this?
E' consigliabile l'apertura della bottiglia almeno un'ora prima della degustazione, utilizzare un calice di dimensioni medio-grandi, baloon o a luce ampia per permettere la diffusione dei profumi.

It is for a big red wine. It doesn't seem to be a frequently used term.
Thanks

Discussion

Dan Newton Feb 8, 2018:
bit late but I'm with everyone else on the translation - "glass with a wide bowl" or other variant thereof. I realize this is a secondary question but, as for how it works together with "balloon", my take would be that the function is both to make the criteria explicit - i.e. the glass needs to have a wide bowl - but also to render the recommendation slightly less prescriptive - i.e. a balloon glass or 'other glass with a wide bowl' - since presumably both would meet the requirement of allowing the aromas of the wine to collect.
Rachel Fell Feb 7, 2018:
No, I think they're contrasting a balloon glass with other types of glass with a wide bowl that would also be good for the purpose in question.
Alberto Bertelli Feb 7, 2018:
Balloon glass Phil, I disagree, unless the article is aimed at wine lovers only. If the author is just providing further information regarding the type of glass recommended to those who may not know the name of this type of glass, the same holds true for English-speaking readers.
Isabelle Johnson (asker) Feb 7, 2018:
Perhaps you're right Phil I didn't read it like that but see your point.
philgoddard Feb 7, 2018:
I think they're explaining "balloon" for Italian speakers, so you don't need to translate it.
Alberto Bertelli Feb 7, 2018:
I believe that the sentence can be interpreted in two ways. The author is referring to two types of glasses, a balloon shaped glass, which has a wide bowl, and a wide-rimmed glass, or it uses the conjunction "or" in the sense of "that is": a balloon glass, that is, wide-rimmed...
Isabelle Johnson (asker) Feb 7, 2018:
Thanks Glass with a wide bowl sounds good.
Anastasia Schüle Feb 7, 2018:
a glass with a wide bowl Bingo! A lot more hits with that :)
Rachel Fell Feb 7, 2018:
Sounds like a glass with a wide bowl.
