This object is usually called "Mandrin", but also "mandrain", "mandreng". It is a long needle that is used to put catheters into place. The reason for the confusion is probably due to the French pronunciation of the word.
So why is Mandrene = Mandrin?

" In der Medizinprodukttechnik werden auf diese Weise Beutel
hergestellt, in welche eine schlauchförmige Öffnung eingesetzt
ist. Hierzu werden in der Regel ein Kunststoffröhrchen

verschweißt" .... "Wenn ein kurzes Röhrchen zwischen zwei Folien eingeschweißt werden soll, wird zum Verschweißen oft eine Mandrene in das Röhrchen eingeführt."
This is exactly the role of the mandrin. Note the application of the welding procedure to medicine products (namely, a small plastic bag with a small tube sticking out.

Das in den Schnipsel einzusetzen, macht ihn aber auch nicht sprachlich besser, da kann man auch gleich "Mandrene" beibehalten und den Leser kopfschütteln lasssen.
