Spanish term

ralear

Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Mechanics / Mech Engineering
In the troubleshooting section of a manual for a vacuum packing machine:

La bomba gira con dificultad, ralea o genera un ruido considerable

I find this to be a highly unusual use of the verb "ralear".

The Spanish manual might have been translated from Catalan, if that is any help.
Proposed translations (English)
5 +1 to slow down
3 racing

Discussion

Robert Carter May 28, 2018:
Ralear > to rale? As in rattle? Just an idea. As Chema says, not much we can do here without a solid basis on which to speculate.
Chema Nieto Castañón May 28, 2018:
Disculpa; acabo de ver la referencia al catalán. Se me ocurre ralingar (relingar en castellano), "moverse con el viento" -o simulando tal (por ejemplo, referido al movimiento del "saco" del aspirador). Pero vaya, sin conocer el original sólo podemos "inventar" ;)
Sorry!
Chema Nieto Castañón May 28, 2018:
Generalmente referido a personas con el sentido de evidenciar una mala inclinación. Aplicado al caso, sólo se me ocurre leerlo como un inespecífico "funciona mal".
No obstante, muy probablemente debas identificar el país de origen de la expresión por la posibilidad de un sentido más específico.

I wonder if they mean something related to ralentí, as in idle, the pump idles

racing

I Spain, "ralea" is what my mechanic calls it when the engine is racing, i.e revving up and/or down when it's not supposed to.

Typo alert: "In Spain..."
Example sentence:

ENGINE RACING PROBLEM 1. Until recently, engine raced on ignition; stabilized after about 1 minute or driving about 100 yards...

Sometimes, while driving, the engine will start to race, and the car refuses to slow down
