EST signal

English to French Other Mechanics / Mech Engineering
Hi all,

This ignition system does not use a conventional distributor and coil.
It uses a crankshaft position sensor input to the electronic control module (ECM).
The ECM then determines electronic spark timing (EST) and triggers the direct ignition system ignition coil.
This type of distributorless ignition system uses a ``waste spark'' method of spark distribution...

The cylinder on the exhaust stroke requires very little of the available energy to fire the spark plug.
The remaining energy is available to the spark plug in the cylinder on the compression stroke.
These systems use the EST signal from the ECM to control the electronic spark timing.

So I have a problem with abbreviations here, should I use them in this text?

Thank you

@ Asker This is a perennial problem!
My own view is that, unless you are dealing with "standard" abbreviations widely used in the field, it is better to NOT attempt to translate them and then create fresh abbreviations — which will be meaningless out of context! FR often abbreviates (sometimes needlessly!) because of rather long, cumbersome expressions, whereas these are often more concise in EN, and abbreviation isn't really necessary.
HOWEVER, if these abbreviations are used alone elsewhere in the document — for example, in the text, or as labels on diagrams — or, worse still, throughout documentation from the same company!, there may be a case to be made for retaining the FR abbreviations, simply for cross-reference purposes, and to avoid subsequently modifying all other documents in the company! If I do this, I often try to provide a glossary at come point of the abbreviations used, along with their original FR expansions + the EN translation; the csutomer can then choose to include this or not as they see fit.

I think this is what I would be tempted to do in this case...

disagree Tony M : There is nothing of 'fréquence' about it in this context.

L'allumage electronique c'est un temps par seconde et ce n'est pas une tempo ou une synchro
disagree FX Fraipont (X) : vous ne savez pas ce qu'est l'avance à l'allumage électronique visiblement.
