Spanish term

entre las muchas dotationes...

Spanish to English Other Architecture dotociones en arquitectura
hello!

I am translatiing a text related to a chapel here in valencia and the author refers to dotaciones. The original sentence is "entre lad muchas dotaciones hay una capilla en la zona....

dotaciones in this context? - qualities, characteristics, facilities ? I suggested features but it was not accepted.

I would appreciate any help.

Discussion

Charles Davis Sep 5, 2018:
Sorry, but what's the problem? "dotación:
1. f. Acción y efecto de dotar."
http://dle.rae.es/?id=EAUavnY

"dotar:
2. tr. Señalar bienes para una fundación o instituto benéfico."
http://dle.rae.es/?id=EAfPPPB

"dotación
1. (= dinero) endowment"
https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/spanish-english...

Chapels and endowments go together like a horse and carriage.
neilmac Sep 5, 2018:
Not a typo To all intents and purposes, "dotación/donación" are largely synonymous here.
Sergio Kot Sep 5, 2018:
@Typo? Could it be a typo for *donaciones*???
neilmac Sep 5, 2018:
Endowment ... seems to be the right way to go. The client obviously wishes to emphasise the "donated/bequeathed" aspect of the chapel.
Helena Chavarria Sep 5, 2018:
@Sergio I’m afraid I don’t understand you. I don’t have a query. I was wandering around the supermarket while my husband was doing the shopping and I was thinking about this question. ‘Dotación’ > ‘dote’ (in Spanish) > dowry > endowment.
Sergio Kot Sep 5, 2018:
@Helena Hello Helena. I fail to see how *endowment* is related to your query.
Helena Chavarria Sep 5, 2018:
I’m using my phone, so I can’t research the term properly. I’ve just looked up the synonym for ‘endowment’ and ‘attribute’ appeared.
Helena Chavarria Sep 5, 2018:
How about outstanding/noteworthy/eyecatching features? Perhaps ‘features’ is too general.
neilmac Sep 5, 2018:
Same here "Features" is what sprang to mind. I'd like to know why it was rejected, and by whom.

among the many endowments

Tried to post this earlier but thunderstorms cut off my electricity and internet. Whoever rejected "features" probably wants to emphasise the endowment/bestowal/ "grace and favour" aspect (i.e. that the chapel etc were built thanks to donations from benefactors.

In fact, you could probably even go with "donations"...
Peer comment(s):

neutral Sergio Kot : No context was given to support the theory that "The client obviously wishes to emphasise the "donated/bequeathed" aspect of the chapel."

Their rejection of "feature", which was my first thought, prompted my assumption. As I see it, it seems likely given the type of text.
agree Helena Chavarria : As I understand it, the chapel is just one of the area’s ‘endowments’ (as in gifts) or attributes.

Or bequests, or legacies, or bequethals.
agree patinba : Some medieval catherdrals in Spain carried a "Libro de Dotaciones" to record endowments.

among the many facilities...

In line with context, IMHO.

Muy amable Natalia!
neutral neilmac : I still wouldn't call the chapel a "facility" in this particular case, where the client evidently wants something more "churchy". That's my take on it as a working translator. Not a "personal issue", thanks very much.

That's a personal issue... not necessarily a linguistic one.
