Italian term

Permette a conoscenza

Non-PRO Italian to English Art/Literary Music Journalistic
Hello all,

I have a term in a text that I am translating, and I'm finding it very difficult to understand - I am wondering if there is a typo in it. Just wanted to get some opinions before I go back to the client!

The text is talking about jazz improvisation and why is so impressive:

L’improvvisazione in musica riesce a stupire ed emozionare perché permette a conoscenza e istinto di fondersi. L’energia individuale del singolo si fonde prima con quella che si crea tra i musicisti come gruppo, e poi tra i musicisti e la platea, dando vita a qualcosa di sempre nuovo ma sempre estremamente coerente col tema.

I am wondering if it should instead be 'permette la conoscenza' which would make more sense to me. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

Thank you for your help again. Just a quick note that I went with a mixture of the two solutions: 'It blends together knowledge and intuition.'

allows knowledge and intuition to blend together Thank you both for your help! It turns out I was reading it in the wrong way, as I was considering 'conoscenza' and 'istinto di fondersi' to be separate, unrelated entities.

Both solutions are good thank you! I might go with a slightly different wording 'allows knowledge and intuition to blend together', because I use blend in the following sentence.

mixes knowledge and instinct

I think I'd probably go with something a little more pithy, like this.
But "allows knowledge and instinct to merge is a good literal translation."

Sorry, typo! I meant to say:

But "allows knowledge and instinct to merge" is a good literal translation.

neutral philgoddard : This is a bit more concise, but I'm not sure it justifies a separate answer.
