Spanish term

Menús veganos en escuelas, hospitales y cárceles

Spanish to English Other Food & Drink Police terminology
I know the direct translation is "menus" but to me "meals" sounds more natural.

We would not say "school menus" we would say "school meals".

The piece is not talking about separate vegan menus but rather options on existing ones.

I do not find "meal" as an entry anywhere, however. What do we think?

Thank you.

Non-PRO (2): Yvonne Gallagher, Rachel Fell

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Domini Lucas Aug 17, 2019:
@Clare Glad could help. Yes, 2nd link seems to have been cut off. Maybe because cutting and pasting from Ipad. If you type Sodexo Vegan Asian Meals Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust you should find a PDF entitled Week 2 Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. You can then download it. I can't see a way to make it into a direct link. Let me know if it works.

Rudeness "writeaway: I could answer this sin problemas with the remnants of my secondary school Spanish".
Clare Rubin (asker) Aug 17, 2019:
Links Thank you, Domini. The second link didn't work but the other two were very useful.

@ Asker
You already answered your own question
"The piece is not talking about separate vegan menus but rather options on existing ones."
Domini Lucas Aug 16, 2019:
@Clare When I worked in the NHS Sodexo provided the patient meals. Here’s some of their links showing vegan meals and vegan meal options, in case of use to you.
https://www.livekindly.com/sodexo-foodservice-200-vegan-meal...
See p. 20 of this link re Asian vegan meals https://www.imperial.nhs.uk/~/media/website/patients-and-vis...
This article talks of vegan options

I agree that menu is wider. The menu shows the vegan options. The patient would then get the vegan option, or vegan meal (“vegan meal” is also used on planes).

Vegan meal options

Much like Gareth's suggestion. Of course not a direct translation but you are correct that "meals" "options" or "meal options" (or choices) do sound better!

Many thanks.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Carol Gullidge : For me, it needs to be one thing or the other, i.e., vegan meals or vegan options for schools, ... etc

agree Domini Lucas : based on discussion entry links.

neutral Yvonne Gallagher : Also for me, it should be one or the other but not both option and meal

Vegan options

Not sure if it will be good for your translation, but I've seen this a lot in different places.
Note from asker:
Many thanks. It's treading that fine line between finding an authentic match and veering too far away from the original that I find tricky. My feeling is maybe this is too far from the original?
Peer comment(s):

agree William Parucki : agreed, either options or meals

agree Christopher Peterson : You could say "vegan menu options" if you really want the word menu in there

vegan options for schools, hospitals, and jails

More complete option as far as the translation is concerned.

I wish I had such an option where I do my food shopping in a free world.
Note from asker:
Thank you. Options is certainly looking like a favourite, now.

Vegan menus for schools, hospitals and prisons

That's how I would probably translate it. Or just as "vegan menus", "healthy menus for schools, hospitals and prisons".

I don't know if this helps, sorry.
