Spanish term

indoloro

Spanish to English Medical Medical (general) physical examination - abdomen
I'm surprised this hasn't been asked before.

It's from a physical examination report: " Al examen físico ... el abdomen blando, indoloro, peristalsis presente ... "

Is this "nontender" or "not painful"? Is there a difference between the two expressions?

Thanks for your help.

Chema Nieto Castañón Nov 15, 2019:
Nontender is the common term here, meaning not sensitive to pain (when pushing on patient's abdomen). We do say no doloroso (not painful), but I would translate as nontender as for common use -and it actually conveys the very same idea: nontender (abdomen) = (abdomen) no doloroso a palpación.
I guess the key diferencie in English would be that non painful abdomen might convey an absence of spontaneous abdominal pain, while nontenderness conveys not painful when pushed on. Rebound tenderness (dolor por rebote, signo de "Blumberg") is another common example in this context; here also "tenderness" is related to pain within the context of an active abdominal physical exam.

agree neilmac : I'd hyphenate it (non-tender)...

Thanks neilmac. I am not sure about the hyphen here as I have seen it both ways. Nontender https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/nontender Do you know any rule of thumb -or other- about hyphenation? Thanks again!
agree Stephen D. Moore : My wife is a nurse; she says that "nontender" and "not painful" mean essentially the same, but "nontender" is what she sees more commonly used.

painless
