Italian term

fare il mellone

Italian to English Art/Literary Other
The whole sentence is this:

Dato che la cesta quando si riempie diventa
pesante, io ho iniziato a portarla sopra alla testa, come ho
visto fare alle femmine dentro al mercato. Ma poi, porta
oggi e porta domani, mi sono caduti i capelli e sono rimasto
col cocuzzolo pelato. E secondo me per questo mia mamma
mi ha fatto fare il mellone, quali pidocchi!

I did not understand the connexion between mellone and pidocchi...

Thank you very much!

Discussion

Michael Korovkin Feb 27, 2020:
it's very simple: Se hai dei pidocchi, ti rasano la testa (ti fanno il melone): it's for your good and to the detriment of the lice. That's all.
Mabre (asker) Feb 26, 2020:
La parola "pidocchi" appare varie volte nel testo ed io, sinceramente, non riesco a capire l'analogia che fa. Vedete:

Mia mamma avanti e io appresso. Dove stiamo andando
non lo so, dice che è per il mio bene. Invece ci sta la
fregatura sotto, come per i pidocchi. È per il tuo bene,
e mi ritrovai con il mellone. Per fortuna che pure all’amico
mio Tommasino gli fecero il mellone, per il suo bene.

Grazie a tutti!
Marco Solinas Feb 25, 2020:
To Asker I think it means shaving one's head (see https://www.parliamomanfredoniano.it/tatta-melone/ ). This was normally done to get rid of lice, but in the case of your source text there was another reason. "quali pidocchi!" means something like "not about lice at all!" or something along these lines

me dice el pelón, como un melón

Según yo, por eso mamá me dice el pelón, como un melón.

Literalmente: como un melón, como los piojos. Pero sería un juego de palabras.

O mejor, pelón sin piojos.

tonsure

I would use tonsure to maintain the sarcastic tone.

The meaning of fare il melone (one "L" only) is shave head. However, this wouldn't properly translate the particular head-shaving the text is talking of, in which a circle of hair is removed from the top of the head.

... that's why my mother conferred the tonsure upon me...
