Spanish term

burlar al discurso aprendido

Spanish to English Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting Art therapy
La arte terapia es una forma de trabajar la persona o la empresa de una forma práctica divertida a través de la expresión artística y con la idea de burlar al discurso aprendido. Es una manera de llegar a las partes más inconscientes que te pueden estar limitando.

Maybe joke at learned speech or rhetoric?

Spanish term (edited): y con la idea de burlar al discurso aprendido
Selected

and with the idea of “thinking outside of the box”

Scare quotes optional here.

This translation seems to me to “cut to the chase” of the intended meaning of the original.

“Of” could well be omitted here.

defy reason/// make fun of all reasoning

discurso can also mean raciocinio reflexión, razonamiento

Origin

with the idea of upsetting the well-rehearsed pitch / script

burlar: (Harrap's) dodge: evade; (Simon & Schuster) to mock

burlarse de: poke fun at; ridicule.

As a student-jobbing, door-to-door salesman of encyclopedias in the Home Counties around London half a century ago, I had to learn a 'sales pitch' off by heart and break off the 'discourse' and leave after the first paragraph - if the answer to my question about educational aspirations had been negative.
Example sentence:

Create Multiple Pitches Don't have just one well-rehearsed pitch. Not everyone has the same level of expertise or interest.

Peer comment(s):

neutral Carol Gullidge : “Upsetting” doesn’t work here/ upsetting the apple cart, perhaps, but not upsetting the script. This doesn’t correlate

it's borderline making fun of or poking fun at - whilst pitch, script or mantra chanted are obvious answers to the asker's question of 'learned speech or rhetoric' - and to which there seems to be *herd immunity*// Pls. re-read original 'discurso' query.

break free from ingrained patterns

This is an interesting double question, as both burlar and discurso aprendido are somewhat tricky.

"Burlar a" is just different from "burlarse de". No joking here; the original states that art therapy focuses on the idea of breaking free (burlar; dodge, circumvent) from ingrained patterns (el discurso aprendido). Now, "discurso aprendido" has a lot into it. The original sounds as if Argentinian and I assume there is either a social component or a psychoanalitical one here. I'd go with the second as for the limited context given, understanding discurso aprendido as our ingrained patterns of thought and action that determine automatic responses in life.

And by the way, I like Forstag's "thinking out of the box". And yet, I feel it misses the stress that discurso aprendido explicitly brings forward in this case, as ingrained patterns of thought. I understand how thinking out of the box implicitly carries this idea of breaking free from ingrained patterns, and yet those are not simply two different ways of saying the same thing.
