Axial probing is widely used as a means to probe the sensor fiber. In axial probing, light is injected from one end of the fiber, along its axis, and interacts with the surrounding cladding via its evanescent wave tail.

tył zanikającej fali
The wave cannot propagate in the cladding. Only its exponentially-decaying component - the evanescent wave - can exist in the cladding, where it decays to zero with distance from the fiber/cladding interface.. Here, apparently, the author emphasizes the very end - the tail - of the evanescent wave. The evanescent wave is the tail, so tail is added for emphasis.

Brzmi rozsądnie, ale zapytam wprost - to są przypuszczenia czy absolutna pewność? :) |

Technika światłowodowych pomiarów realizowanych w sposób geometrycznie ciągły (ang. distributed fiber optic sensors – DFOS) wprowadza zupełnie nowe możliwości w analizie stanu technicznego konstrukcji inżynierskich w porównaniu do tradycyjnych technik punktowych. Wykorzystanie wirtualnych czujników odkształceń i/lub temperatury, o bazie pomiarowej sięgającej nawet 5 [mm], rozłożonych szeregowo wzdłuż całej trasy pomiarowej o długości do kilkudziesięciu metrów, pozwala na szczegółową analizę deformacji badanego obiektu.
