language usage
what is the standard use of footnotes (poznamky pod ciarou) in Slovak? Is there a space between the target word and the footnote number? If the footnote comes at the end of a sentence, does the footnote come after or before the period? in a series of terms, does it come before or after commas?

It is no space between target word and footnote number, but footnote number is smaller.
Footnote comes after comma. Example: L.Drozdik.67
_________
67. Sprava sa nachadza v knihe: Kowalski,T., Relacija.......,
But in the middle of sentence,
Example:
..... (aj mimo Panonie)*, ktore tu ziju......

poznámky pod čiarou
The term "Poznámky pod čiarou is OK", but it is possible to use also terms "odkazy", or "anotácie".
I think there is no space between the target word and index of footnote.
I think the comma is after the index.
