Italian term

Il disegno preparatorio è riportato da un cartone

Italian to English Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
The full sentence is this and I'm having trouble finding a translation if anyone can help clarify for me

Il disegno preparatorio è riportato da un cartone attraverso la tecnica dello spolvero e poi ripreso integralmente a pennello con nero a base di carbone che, in corrispondenza degli incarnati, risulta parzialmente visibile anche a occhio nudo.

Thanks in advance

I agree that it would help a great deal to know what the artwork is.
Emma is one of those "non-logged-in visitors" (whatever they are) with a large number of questions left open, which is not a big incentive to answer this one.
Does "riportato da" mean transferred from, or to? I'm not sure.
And "spolvero" is pouncing, a tracing technique that uses powder.

Il disegno preparatorio è riportato da un cartone My question is this: Is the text talking about the preparatory drawing traced onto the fullscale cartoon (which is then transferred onto the blank surface of the final artwork? It isn't clear from the text. Your interesting reference from the National Gallery seems to suggest this.

What artwork are we talking about? Maybe the asker could provide more context

agree Cillie Swart : Agreed!

thank you :)
neutral Janice Giffin : I believe a cartoon is a full scale drawing, whereas a preparatory drawing may be a study of part of the final artwork.

Thank you for your remark :)
neutral philgoddard : To, not on. But couldn't it mean "from"?

Thank you for your comment; I think it is "to", not "from"...

The preliminary sketch is transferred to cardboard

In this context looks like cartone is referring to the actual physical medium.
Peer comment(s):

agree Marina O'Toole : Yes, in this case cartone is cardboard, whereas cartoon refers more to comics

disagree philgoddard : No, it means cartoon, and nothing to do with comics.
